'HKIC drives market capital into promising firms'

Chief Executive of Hong Kong Investment Corporation (HKIC), Clara Chan, on Sunday said the company had evolved from acting as a pure investor into a corporation playing diverse roles. Speaking on a Commercial Radio programme, Chan said the company, owned by the SAR government, was a lead investor that drove market investment. “Besides acting as an investor, we also look for promising enterprises. During their growth journey and investment rounds, we do more than just invest – we lead the investment and attract more investors to support the company together,” she said. “For every dollar we invest in a company, we can, on average, mobilise more than eight dollars in long-term market investment.” The HKIC also served as a pioneer that would further support the development of the Northern Metropolis, the Greater Bay Area and cutting-edge fields, Chan said. She said the company aimed to contribute to society apart from making financial profits, hoping the enterprises which received investment from the HKIC could provide products or services that benefited people. HKIC investment covered various sectors including artificial intelligence, green energy and life sciences, all of which are related to people’s lives, she added. Chan also said the company had invested in over 200 enterprises, among which 11 were already listed in Hong Kong while over 30 had submitted or planned to submit listing applications in the SAR this year. Chinatown was also home to Charlie’s Meat and Seafood, a white-tiled butcher shop that opened in 1971. Inside was a glass display case filled with cuts of meat. On the...
