In Australia, heat waves are responsible for 55% of all natural disaster-related deaths. Experts are in a state of alert after Australia has seen century-old heatwave records completely shattered during the past months.

Hobart alone had a November run of six consecutive days above 26 degrees, a phenomenon not witnessed in 130 years. Sydney, on the other hand, saw seven consecutive days in November with maximum temperatures equal or above 25 degrees. This hasn’t happened at all since 1968 and has only occurred in two Novembers in the last 118 years.

Heatwaves form when high pressure in the upper atmosphere stops air from rising and traps the heat, similarly to how a pressure cooker works. Extreme heatwaves wreak havoc on the environment and threaten power, traffic and water infrastructure.

With reports showing the country was getting hotter each year, many Australians underestimated the dangers heatwaves posed. It’s not only the biggest killer, but actually kills more people than all the other events put together. The 2009 heatwave that hit Victoria and South Australia killed 432 people, or two and a half times the number of people killed in the Black Saturday bush fires that followed. From 1844 to 2010, extreme heat events killed at least 5332 people in Australia.

IF YOU think it’s hot now, brace yourselves because heatwaves are not only going to increase in frequency but also intensity, threatening to claim more lives each year. That is the dire warning from scientists who warn Australia remains grossly under prepared for what is becoming a possible deadly extreme weather event.

So prepare yourself for the impending heat wave to hit Australia this summer. There was a record number of “significant weather events” in the last northern hemisphere summer, so brace yourself for a repeat performance in the southern hemisphere this summer.

Contact a local electrician to install cooling fans or air conditioners in the home or workplace, prior to this impending heatwave and avoid the rush, which inevitably will occur, resulting in extended waiting times.
