Classic Boxing Coach Talks About His Experience in CERT in California

One of the most renowned boxing coaches in Southern California explains what CERT is and why it is important to be prepared.

Chuck Eisenberg, the founder and the head coach of Costa Mesa-based boxing training facility, Classic Boxing Coach shared his insight into the CERT program.

CERT stands for Community Emergency Response Team, and is aimed at teaching regular individuals in communities how to properly respond to crises such as earthquakes and fires and help calm and manage communities until official help arrives.

The program starts with theoretical training which spans some 8 weeks, with a total of 30 hours of effective training. Those who go through the theoretical part are assembled in Orange County Fire Authority training center where they are put through a practical exercise.

“As a boxing coach, I teach all my students to be alert and prepared for anything. In order to be a proper boxer, you need to react quickly and be able to think on your feet. What CERT requires you to do is pretty much the same thing. Thinking quickly and rationally in a stressful situation is required by both,” says Chuck Eisenberg of Classic Boxing Coach. Mr. Eisenberg continues: “Working with CERT has been great, and it has even allowed me to enroll the Citizens’ Police Academy in Irvine, as to be involved in searches for missing persons, various preparedness drills and neighborhood outreach programs. Still, my work with CERT is not only about my own development. It is about helping the community at a critical point, which is something I feel strongly about.”

About Classic Boxing Coach: The gym was founded in 2007 by its current owner Chuck Eisenberg. The gym focuses primarily on proper boxing lessons. That means that Classic Boxing Coach doesn’t offer cardio boxing, but rather the place to learn actual strategies, stances, and tactics for boxing as a sport.
