Despite the exodus of some of Pennsylvania’s population of late, one man has decided to return to Pennsylvania. He’s invested his savings into a brand new tree service venture. After several years spent out of state, Mr. Jake McMillan has returned to his old stamping ground in Rochester PA. And according to him at least, he’s moved back for good reason.

Recent analysis of USDA Forestry Inventory data by PennState Extension reveals that the volume of standing timber in the State has grown by more than 5 times since 1955. When drafting the company’s business plan, Jake discovered that 3 in every 5 acres in Pennsylvania are classified as undeveloped forested land. A surprising 71% of these woodlands are privately owned. Some 750,000 individuals, families, homesteaders and corporations own 12 million acres of all forests and woods in the State. Only 3% is owned by the forest product industry.

Jake added: “I don’t know precisely how many of the State’s 750,000 woodland owners reside in Beaver, Butler, Lawrence and Allegheny counties but its got to be a lot. This large number of forest owners expands our conventional target market of residential and business customers by a large margin.”

As a result of this and other desk research, a new business has been started by Jake called Beaver County Tree Service. McMillan owns and runs the new enterprise with a crew of 5 including a climber and ground staff. In doing so, he is providing much needed employment on this stretch of the Ohio River.

Jake McMillan, owner of Beaver County Tree Service says: “With less than 1% of our State’s forests being cleared every year and the land parceled out into so many smallholdings and homesteads, our trees are getting larger and more valuable every year. I’m more than happy to be able to return to my home town to care for the local trees and serve their owners.”

The service area covered by Beaver County Tree Service has a 30 mile radius from their base in Rochester PA. It includes most of Pittsburgh’s residents and business-owners too. It also includes Beaver, Butler, Lawrence and Allegheny Counties in the West of Pennsylvania.

Despite the opportunity revealed by the increasing volume of standing timber in the Keystone State, starting and running a tree service business is far from easy. For sure, mechanical innovations in the industry have been helpful e.g. grapple saws and tracked spider buckets. Yet the tree service industry remains a dangerous and labor-intensive business. The industry also has to absorb increasingly expensive overheads such as diesel fuel to transport equipment, crews and cut tree debris across a large geographic area. Discretionary incomes have also fallen as a result of high inflation biting into domestic budgets over the last 18 months. For sure, people have less to spend on their trees at the moment, further threatening tree care profit margins.

The new business starts with a long term view reflecting their investment in heavy machinery and staff training. Jake and his crew are also positive they can reach their chosen market effectively including the private forest dwellers and owners. In this way they can apply their insured tree service expertise to help West PA’s fast-maturing stock of trees flourish in the decades ahead.
